The Client
Based in Dorset, Drilling Systems (UK) Ltd. are leading suppliers of innovative training simulators to the international oil & gas, crane and transport industries.
The Challenge
One of Drilling Systems products, was controlled by a mini Embedded PC, which was going obsolete. They sought to replace it with an Ethernet link to a standard laptop, and tasked AIID with designing a system that would simplify the assembly process, reduce costs and improve performance. As a training device, efficient performance of the system is critical in order to achieve regulatory bodies’ approval and meet assessment requirements.
The AIID solution
The original system used a host of digital/analogue input and output devices connected with ribbon cable and wiring looms. This made assembly complicated, time consuming, and awkward. AIID’s system replaced all these devices and wiring with a single printed circuit board that was simple to install and led to greatly increased reliability. The design was so successful that it was immediately applied with minor modifications to further Drilling Systems products.
